Pianist Jeffrey Biegel to Perform Leroy Anderson's Concerto and New Arrangement of Islamey With Adrian Gnam and Macon Symphony on November 1 & 2


The internationally renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel will continue his series of 50th Anniversary performances of legendary composer Leroy Anderson's Piano Concerto in C with the Macon Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Adrian Gnam conducting, on Saturday, November 1 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, November 2 at 2 PM at the Grand Opera House, 651 Mulberry Street in Macon, Georgia. The November 2 performance will be part of the MSO's Pumpkin Pops Concert. For the Saturday night November 1 performance, Mr. Biegel will also present his new transcription for piano and orchestra of Balakirev's Islamey Fantasy, based on the solo piano piece.

These concerts will continue the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the 1953 Premiere of Anderson's Piano Concerto, which began with Biegel's Boston Pops performances of the work this past June. The composer was a longtime Boston Pops staff arranger, a Harvard graduate and a pupil of Walter Piston. You can find much more about him at http://www.leroy-anderson.com/.

Jeffrey Biegel has edited the two-piano version of the Concerto for Theodore Presser at the request of the Anderson family, He has played the concerto in Chicago's Grant Park in 1993, (the first performance of the concerto there since 1953), then St. Louis, with other orchestras throughout the U.S., Turkey (the Izmir Symphony) and the New York Premiere with Skitch Henderson and the NY Pops in Carnegie Hall.

Referred to by Leonard Bernstein as "a splendid musician and a brilliant performer," pianist Jeffrey Biegel performed the American premiere of the fully restored original 1924 manuscript of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall in Boston. He has subsequently performed this piece with orchestras across the U.S. and in Germany. He has also presented performances from Maine to California of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's Millennium Fantasy for piano and orchestra, a work he commissioned in collaboration with 26 American orchestras and which was Premiered in September of 2000 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducting.
