VAKHTANG JORDANIA
INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION
KHARKOV, UKRAINE - SEPTEMBER 2002

THE EVENT
The Kharkov Philharmonic Society of Kharkov, Ukraine, announces the second Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition. To be held in September 2002 in the beautiful, historic city of Kharkov in the northeastern Ukraine, this competition is open to conductors from around the world who wish to enhance their careers through international competition, expand their network of global contacts and have a wonderful experience working with the musicians of this superb orchestra.

THE COMPETITION CONTESTANTS
These are the contestants selected from the international field of almost 75 applicants for the second Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition.

Lance Inouye — American, lives in New York City — Music Director/Conductor of World Youth Orchestra of New York. Recent guest conductor of Russia's St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra "Klassika" and Sochi Symphony Orchestra as well as Brevard Music Festival Repertory Orchestra in North Carolina.

Charles Gambetta — American, lives in Summerfield, North Carolina — Frequent guest conductor with Rome (Italy) Festival Orchestra, as well as Greensboro, Fayetteville, Young American and Hudson Valley Symphonies and many other American ensembles, also on faculties of Guilford College and Music Academy of North Carolina, both in Greensboro.

Ksenia Jarko — Russian, lives in Moscow — Former Assistant Conductor of Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow State Conservatory College of Music. Guest conducted Symphonic Orchestra of Moscow's Bolshoi Theater, Sochi Symphony Orchestra and Ministry of Defense Orchestra.

Maxim Kuzin — Ukrainian, lives in Kyiv, Ukraine — Conductor at Kyiv State Operetta Theater. Former choir conductor at Kyiv Music School #26 and choral singer in several groups, including "Khreschatik" chamber choir and N.V. Lysenko Choir of Kyiv.

Ivan Meylemans — Belgian, lives in Loenen A/D Vecht, Netherlands — Music Director of Sweelinck Chamber Orchestra of Amsterdam. Conducted Dutch Promenade Orchestra. Principal trombonist of Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and faculty member of that city's Conservatory.

Oleg Proskurnya — Russian (U.S. Citizen), lives in Savannah, Georgia — Music Director of Sochi Symphony Orchestra. Former principal guest conductor of Russia's Petrozavodsk Symphony Orchestra. Founder and faculty member of Karelia International Conducting workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Susan Robinson — American, lives in Ocala, Florida — Artistic Director/Conductor of Central Florida Philharmonic and Music Director/Conductor of Central Florida Master Choir. Director of Orchestral Activities/Conductor of University of Florida Orchestra in Gainesville.

Hyung Sang Joo — Korean, lives in Los Angeles, California — Music Director of Asian American Philharmonic of Los Angeles. Guest conductor of New York Virtuosi Chamber Symphony and Korean American Symphony of Chicago.

Elior Sharivker — Israeli, lives in Ra'anna, Israel — Director of Jerusalem "Hoveivi Hamusica" Symphony Orchestra and former director of Combo Ensemble at Ra'anana Conservatory and flutist in Technion Symphony Orchestra.

Jesus J. Soldevilla — Spanish, lives in San Sebastian, Spain — Conductor of Opus III Percussion Ensemble and of Walton-Sitwell Ensemble. Frequent conductor of contemporary music ensembles and guest conductor with Basque Chamber Orchestra and Aita Donosti Orchestra.

Monika Stefaniak — Polish, lives in Gdansk, Poland — Graduate of Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw and currently studies at Paderewski Music Academy in Poznan. Studied conducting in Italy at Accademia Chigiana in Siena.

Yuri Suchkov — Russian, lives in Moscow — Served as Chief Conductor of Stavropol State Philharmonic and Renaissance Chamber Orchestra. Guest conductor of Saratov Philharmonic, Rostov Philharmonic and Kislovotsk Philharmonic.

Andres Salvador Tolcachir — Argentinean, lives in Bloomington, Indiana — Assistant Conductor of Indiana University Opera; former Associate Conductor of Libertador San Martin Youth Symphony Orchestra in Buenos Aires and Music Director of NEA Choir.

John Traill — British, lives on Oxford, England — Principal Conductor of Oxford University Philharmonia. Former principal conductor of Oxford University Sinfonietta, The Mozart Orchestra of Norwich and Claxton Opera of Norfolk, U.K.

Scott Jackson Wiley — American, lives in New York City Ñ _ Music Director of New York's South Shore Symphony, Frequent guest conductor of Bronx Arts Ensemble, New Amsterdam Symphony, New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble, Delaware Valley Chamber Orchestra and Indianapolis Philharmonic.

Yuri Yanko — Ukrainian, lives in Kharkov — Principal conductor of Kharkov Philharmonic. Former conductor of Zaporozhye Philharmonic Orchestra, Kharkov Opera and Young Symphony Orchestra of Kharkov.

Daniel Angel Zuker — Argentinean, lives on Buenos Aires — Conductor of Symphonic Orquestra Santa Cecilia, Camerata Santa Cecilia and Buenos Aires Lawyers Association Chorus. Also active as composer and pianist. Graduate of Manuel de Falla Municipal Conservatoire in Buenos Aires.

Nikolay Stetsun — Kharkov, Ukraine — Composer in Residence and Music Director of the Kharkov Philharmonic Society, Honored Art Worker of Ukraine - composer of competition selected contemporary composition

Jonathan Sternberg — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Renowned conductor and leader of conducting workshops throughout Europe, former Professor of Conducting at Eastman School and Professor Emeritus at Temple University in Philadelphia - formerly Musical Director Royal Flemish Opera, Halifax Symphony and Harkness Ballet.

David Winkler — New York, New York — Executive Director, Chamber Players International and widely renowned Composer of works premiered by National Symphony in Washington DC, Aspen Festival Orchestra and many others - composer of competition selected contemporary composition

Lawrence Dillon — Winston-Salem, North Carolina (not part of competition jury) — Composer in Residence and Director of Performance series for North Carolina School of the Arts - Winner of Berlin Composition Prize - composer of competition selected contemporary composition
