THE EVENT
The Kharkov Philharmonic Society of Kharkov, Ukraine, announces the third Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition. To be held in August/September 2003 in the beautiful, historic city of Kharkov in the northeastern Ukraine, this competition is open to conductors from around the world who wish to enhance their careers through international competition, expand their network of global contacts and have a wonderful experience working with the musicians of this superb orchestra.

THE COMPETITION CONTESTANTS
These are the contestants selected from the international field of almost 75 applicants for the third Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition.

Marcos Arakaki — Brazilian, lives in Sao Paulo — Principal Conductor of the Rio de Janeiro Summer Festival. Former Assistant Conductor of the Santo Andre Symphony Orchestra of Sao Paulo. Many guest conducting engagements throughout Brazil. 1st Prize Winner of Brazil's Eleazar de Carvalho National Conducting Competition in 2001.

Sylvain Bousquet — French, lives in Marseille — Founder and Music Director of the Orchestre des Universites de Montpelier and Music Director of the Ensemble Instrumental du Pays d'Aix. Guest conductor at the Operette Gardoise in Nimes and Vergeze. Teacher at the Ecole de Musique Georges Bizet in Arles.

Nikolas Nguyen Caoile — American, lives in Washington — Conductor of Campus Philharmonia Orchestra and Assistant Conductor of University Symphony Orchestra of University of Michigan. Guest Conductor with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Youth Symphony and the Salem Chamber Orchestra.

Victor Costa — French, lives in Lyon — Recent guest conducting with the Lyon Operetta Theatre, the Rome Saint Cecilia Conservatory Orchestra, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra and the Danish National Radio Symphony. Served as Music Director of the Nantes Symphonic Association and Utopia Symphony Orchestra.

Tido Dejan — Haitian, lives in Daours, France — Music Director of the Festival Chevalier Saint-George in Guadeloupe and Principal Conductor of the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra. Regular guest conductor of the Macedonian Philharmonic of Skopje and the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Leslie B. Dunner — American, lives in Maryland — Former Music Director of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, the Dearborn Symphony, Principal Conductor of the Dance Theater of Harlem, Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic and Cover Conductor of the Chicago Symphony.

Robert Rene Galvan — American, lives in New York City — Conductor of the Springfield Symphony Chorus and the Manhattan College Singers. Former Principal Guest Conductor of Austin Choral Artists in Texas and Conductor of the University of Texas University Chorus and Longhorn Singers.

Lawrence Golan — American, lives in Colorado — Music Director/Conductor of the Portland Ballet Orchestra of Maine and the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra. Principal Guest Conductor of the Bolshoi National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukbekistan. Former Music Director of the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra.

Park Jong-Hwei — Korean, lives in Seoul — Chief Conductor, Ulsan City Youth Symphony. Assistant Conductor, New Philharmonic Orchestra of Pusan and Eunpyong Philharmonic Orchestra of Seoul. Guest Conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Fukuoka Symphony of Japan and the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra.

Evgeny Kirilov — Russian, lives in Nizhni Novgorod — Conductor of Symphony Orchestras in Nizhni Novgorod and Yaroslavl. Conductor of the Nizhni Novgorod Youth Chamber Orchestra and Municipal Chamber Ensemble of Soloists "Sofia." 2nd Prize Winner of the 2002 All-Russia Choral Conductors Competition.

Elena Krapchatova — Russian, lives in Moscow — Conductor of the Youth Orchestra of the Kuzminki Arts Centre and the Neapolitan Orchestra Serenati at the Schnittke State Institute of Music, both in Moscow.

Gioacchino Longobardi — Italian, lives in New York. Principal Guest Conductor, Orchestra da Camera di Napoli and Sofia Festival Orchestra, Bulgaria. Artistic Director, International Institute Domenico Scarlatti. Guest Conductor Kasugai City Philharmonic of Japan and Russian Philharmonic Orchestra on tour in Italy.

Jeffery Meyer — American, lives in Illinois — Artistic Director, St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic. Former Director of the Symphony Orchestra at University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. Guest Conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic and the Hradec Kralove Philharmonic.

Wolfgang Michel — German, lives in Glashuetten, Germany — Guest Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Nurnberg Symphonic Orchestra, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra of the Norddeutsche Rundfunk, the Filharmonia Sudecka in Walbrzych, Poland and the Philharmonic of Hradec Kralove of the Czech Republic.

Michael Mishra — British, lives in Illinois — Director of Orchestral Activities, Southern Illinois University. Former Assistant Conductor of Greeley Philharmonic in Colorado. Guest Conductor of Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, Vratza Philharmonic and Silesian State Opera of Opava, Czech Republic.

Clara Lim Soo Yun — Korean, lives in Singapore — Assistant Conductor, Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra, Singapore. Guest Conductor, Korean Chamber Orchestra in Paris and on tour throughout France and Medical Wind Ensemble Orchestra and Korean Church Choir, both in Paris.

Laura Schumann — American, lives in Ohio — Music Director/Conductor, Southeastern Ohio Symphony. Former Music Director, Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra. Former Cover Conductor for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in Ohio. 2001 Recipient of ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming.

Vladimir Skripchuk — Ukrainian, lives in Kharkov — Music Director and founder, National Academy of Law Orchestra. Former Director of the Kharkov Institute of Air Forces Orchestra and Conductor of Lvov Military Academy Orchestra. Studied trumpet at the Ternopil Music College.

Marit Strindlund — Swedish, lives in Stockholm — Artistic Director and Conductor of the Nyckelviken Chamber Orchestra. Regular Conductor of the SAMI Sinfonietta. Guest Conductor of the Gavle Symfoniorkester, the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra and the Dalarnus, St. Thomas and Sundbybergs Orkesterforenings.

Carlo Tenan — Italian, lives in Bologna — Guest Conductor of Orchestra Filarmonica "Arturo Toscanini" di Parma, Filarmonica di Bologna, l'Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, I Virtuosi Italiani, l'Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Orchestra del Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Stephen E. Tucker — American, lives in California — Orchestra Conductor of the University of California at Irvine. Chief Conductor Designate of the Thayer Conservatory Chamber Orchestra and Chorus. Former Cover Conductor of the Pacific Symphony and Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

C. Paige Vickery — American, lives in New York City — Music Director and Conductor of the Boulder Youth Symphony. Former Music Director of the Pikes Peak Philharmonic and the Colorado Youth Symphony. Guest conducting with Bombay Symphony Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra and Centennial Philharmonic of Colorado.

Yaira Yonne — German, lives in Basel, Switzerland — Music Director of the Orchester Liestal and several Community Orchestras in Switzerland. Guest Conductor of the Savaria Symphony of Hungary, the North Bohemian Philharmonic Orchestra of the Czech Republic and the Lucerne Festival and Ensemble Esdragon of Switzerland.

Marcello Abbado — Milan, Italy — Pianist, composer, former Director of Milan Conservatory and founder of Symphonic Orchestra Verdi in Milan. Juror in many international competitions, including Van Cliburn, Tchaikovsky, Leeds, Tokyo, London, Vienna, Peking and Ibla Grand Prize.

Yuri Alzhnev — Kharkov, Ukraine — Composer, Art Director and Chief Conductor of the Oberegy Theater.

Joan McNeill-Murray — Chattanooga, Tennessee — President of Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition and international consultant on volunteerism within the arts industry. Served orchestras from Costa Rica, Canada, Mexico and U.S. during past 20 years. Elected to board of American Symphony Orchestra League and served as President of Council on Volunteerism. Currently serves on board of Trustees of Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Association, Eos Orchestra of New York and named an Honorary Doctor of Arts with Kharkov Symphony.

Jonathan Sternberg — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Renowned conductor and leader of conducting workshops throughout Europe, former Professor of Conducting at Eastman School and Professor Emeritus at Temple University in Philadelphia - formerly Musical Director Royal Flemish Opera, Halifax Symphony and Harkness Ballet.

Yuri Suchkov — Moscow,Russia — Served as Chief Conductor of Stavropol State Philharmonic and Renaissance Chamber Orchestra. Guest conductor of Saratov Philharmonic, Rostov Philharmonic and Kislovotsk Philharmonic.

David Winkler — New York, New York — Executive Director, Chamber Players International and widely renowned composer of works premiered by National Symphony in Washington DC, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Kharkov Philharmonic, Daegu City Symphony (S. Korea) and others. Upcoming Premieres in New York, Seoul, Caracas and other cities.
