American conductor David Handel has been reappointed as Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. Maestro Handel's position with the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo will work concurrently with his other current positions as Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia and Principal Conductor of American Voices. Maestro Handel has said this about his appointment, "This represents an important and ongoing opportunity to continue applying many of the successful initiatives we've begun here - reaching an ever broader public, continuing to strengthen the structure of this fine institution, thereby developing higher artistic standards and becoming even more relevant to the general public and cultural life of the region. The UNCuyo Symphony Orchestra is a highly capable ensemble, with many outstanding musicians. Historically, it has played an important role in the musical life of one the largest cultural centers in Latin America. I have every expectation that we will achieve even greater things together in Mendoza and throughout the region." David Handel has developed an extraordinary reputation as one of the most respected and innovative conductors in Latin America. His imaginative programming and distinctive community approach have brought record numbers of Bolivians to National Symphony concerts. Since the beginning of his tenure in Bolivia, audience attendance has grown twelve-fold, most of the new audience composed of young concertgoers. Handel's energy and critical acclaim have made him one of the busiest conductors in Latin America and has led to his numerous invitations as guest conductor with many of the most important orchestras of the region. The syndicated South American magazine COSAS reported "...Handel has brought the National Symphony of Bolivia to levels of public awareness and excellence heretofore unknown. His energetic podium manner and repose in real life are fresh air in our midst." In fact, Handel's imaginative programming and distinctive community approach have brought record numbers of Bolivians to National Symphony concerts.
