Orchestra
Development and Institution Building Concerts,
Seminars and Consultations Presented by
DAVID HANDEL
Guest Conductor and
Orchestra Consultant
The Proposal
The Problem Stated
Symphony orchestras throughout the world, especially
those in countries experiencing cultural shifts with
respect to government decentralization and
privatization, find themselves under-funded and
ill-equipped to confront the challenges of a
market-oriented environment.
The Solution
David Handel can assist orchestras in effectively
confronting these challenges by presenting seminars
that introduce proven strategies for artistic,
community and institutional development. His practical
experience and problem solving strategies have achieved
unparalleled results in parts of the world where
orchestral music faces the difficulty of competing in
an ever more diverse cultural arena.
These seminars and consultations
with Maestro Handel can help enable the orchestra to
become the most dynamic member of the cultural life of
the community. Music directors, musicians,
administrative personnel and volunteers alike will
learn specific strategies and approaches to developing
a private sector support organization, sponsorship
opportunities, how to make the institution's public
image work for them and how to create a collaborative
institutional team involving both the public and
private sectors.
All of the information David
Handel brings to his presentations are the result of
his many years of practical, hands-on experience
working with orchestras, especially within the cultural
contexts of Latin America and Central Asia. His United
States Information Agency work, along with his work
through the State Department Cultural Specialist
Program and the prestigious Fulbright Program make him
uniquely qualified for this important
presentation.
About David Handel
Dynamic American conductor David Handel has developed
an extraordinary reputation as an important innovator
on the orchestral scene of the Americas and has been
called "one of the most brilliant young conductors
performing today ... commanding and decisive ..." As
music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of
Bolivia, his creative programming and community
outreach initiatives have brought record numbers of
Bolivians to National Symphony concerts. Since the
beginning of his tenure in that country, audience
attendance has increased by over 600%, more than half
of the new audience composed of young concert-goers.
His achievements with the National Symphony of Bolivia
have drawn international attention as a model for
institutional development and community leadership.
Articles about this have been featured in Aboard
Magazine, Sonus Magazine, on CNN and ECO-México

David Handel is one of the only American conductors to
have been invited to perform in Cuba in recent
years.
Maestro Handel has represented
the United States in Latin America and Central Asia as
a recipient of United States Information Agency awards
and as a Cultural Ambassador through the State
Department Cultural Specialist Program. Maestro Handel
