California-based composer D'Arcy Reynolds' Cloven Dreams will be presented by South Africa's Sontonga String Quartet on Saturday, June 17 - 8 PM at Gallery 305, located at 305 Miners Trail Road in Grass Valley, California. Cloven Dreams, which was commissioned by East/West Continuo of Portland, Oregon, after a group member visited Helen Martins' Owl House in South Africa in the Summer of 2002, is a programmatic work in three sections, which takes the listener from the exterior Camel Yard to the interior of Owl House, followed by the transmutation of this material when the Little Devil Enters the Camel Yard in the third and final section of the piece. The third section represents the integration of the "inner" and "outer" aspects of Ms. Martins' home and inner life. Other composers on the program will include Peter Louis van Dijk, Juistinian Tamusuza and Priaulx Rainier. Tickets for this concert are $10 and will be available at the door. For reservations or other information, please call 530 478-0572. Formed in 2002, the Sontonga Quartet was immediately engaged to tour internationally with Confessions of Zeno,a multimedia collaboration with the renowned Handspring Puppet Company, the internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge, and Kevin Volans, one of South Africa's most lauded composers. The quartet has established itself as one of the finest exponents of both the classical and contemporary repertoire. In its first 3 years, it gave world premieres of works by more than a dozen South African composers to South African premieres of works by Arvo Part, Peter Louis van Dijk and Henryk Gorecki. Their repertoire list already includes more than 30 works by South African composers, who they perform throughout South Africa as well as abroad, so that these composers might receive the international recognition.
