Azure Ensemble to Present World Premiere of Music by Beth Anderson on March 4 at Symphony Space

American composer Beth Anderson's Nightsong for soprano, viola and harp will be given its World Premiere in a new chamber version by the Azure Ensemble on Saturday, March 4, 2006 - 7:30pm at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater at Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street in Manhattan.

The composer writes, "Nightsong, with words by David Mason, is about a woman having a nervous breakdown. The music begins in a-minor indicating her depression. It switches styles, dynamics, range and moods often indicating a manic disorder-going back and forth between a rock and role feeling with spoken text and a seductive section, a more dramatic section, and eventually a vocalize which she sings as though lost in a beautiful dream of how things ought to be. The unstable music and moodiness returns and she is able at the end to let the audience know that she is very aware of the hell she inhabits."

Nightsong was composed in 2005 for soprano Francoise Vanhecke who premiered the piano vocal version on November 20th, 2005 at the Centre d'art Chapelle de Boondael in Bruxelles, Belgium.

The March 4 concert will also include music by Chen Yi, Hilary Tann, Judith Shatin, Alice Shields and Marilyn Bliss.

Tickets for this concert are $15, with discounts for Symphony Space members, seniors and students. For more information, call 212-864-5400 or visit Symphony Space online at http://www.symphonyspace.org/.
