World Premiere of Dan Locklair's The Gift of Music with The Winston-Salem Children's Chorus
New Work Features Text by North Carolina Poet Laureate Fred Chappell

Dan Locklair's The Gift of Music will be given its World Premiere performance by The Winston-Salem Children's Chorus, Barbara C. Beattie, Conductor as part of a special Annual Mother's Day Concert on Sunday, May 8, 2005, 3:00 p.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 2575 Parkway Drive in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The Gift of Music is a setting by Dan Locklair of a poem by Fred Chappell, North Carolina's Poet Laureate, and was written to celebrate the Chorus' 10th Anniversary. The WSCC is an outgrowth of the Stevens Center Children's Chorus, which was started in 1993. Under the direction of Barbara Beattie, the group made its debut under the new name in 1997, delighting audiences with its performances. Upcoming concerts promise to be wonderful events for the community and the young singers who participate, while concert tours will introduce the state and nation to the area's talented young singers.

Tickets for this concert are available through The Winston-Salem Children's Chorus box office at (336) 703-0001. For more concert information, contact the Chorus at (336) 703-0001 or visit them online at http://www.wschildrenschorus.org.

This World Premiere of The Gift of Music follows by one week the May 1 Alabama Premiere of Locklair's Gloria for choir, brass and percussion, performed at First United Methodist Church in Birmingham by the church's Chancel Choir and members of the Alabama Symphony. Based on the traditional Latin text, this piece was composed in 1998.
